RESOURCE
GUIDE FOR VETERANS AND FAMILIES
With so many services for veterans, it can be
difficult to know where to start. Here's a brief summary of four local
resources. We start with the Veterans Resource Office on campus, where
you can go to get personalized information about all of the services
listed here, and more.
Veterans
Resource Office in Fraser Hall
The University of Minnesota's Veterans Resource Office is in 200 Fraser
Hall to provide veterans and current military members, as well
as their families, with information regarding both educational and
non-educational benefits, military transfer credits, veterans'
employment help, family assistance, and transition issues.
Contact the Veterans Resource Office with questions about any of these
issues, or to set up a one-on-one appointment to talk about benefits or
resources that might be available to you or your family. David
Schrader, the Metro Region Coordinator, will sort through the various
programs and resources available to you, and make sure that you know
where to go next. Call 612-625-7620 or e-mail schr0381@umn.edu.
The
office is located at the One Stop Student Services Center in 200 Fraser
Hall.
County Veterans
Service Officers
County Veterans Service Officers (CVSOs) provide advice and assistance
for veterans filing claims for state and/or federal non-educational
benefits. They act as advocates for and provide resources to veterans,
their families, and/or survivors, assisting them in obtaining a better
standard of life by utilizing the benefits they have earned and are
entitled to under law.
David Olson is an Assistant Veterans' Service Officer for Hennepin
County. He has worked with veterans for more than twenty-five years,
and he notes that his office “is the front line for [state and federal]
services…The state does not do VA applications and the VA does not do
state applications”—the County Veterans Service Officers, however,
handle both kinds of applications, especially medical claims for both
service-related and non-service related issues.
In addition to contacting David Schrader in the on-campus Veterans
Resource Office for a one-on-one conversation about the full range of
veterans benefits and resources (see above), veterans attending the
University of Minnesota can contact Olson or one of his colleagues at
the Hennepin County office to learn about and to file claims for
medical and other non-educational benefits (veterans may also contact
the CVSO in their home county).
To contact the Hennepin County Veterans Service Office, call
612-348-3300 or
e-mail david.olson@co.hennepin.mn.us.
A directory of other Minnesota
CVSO¿s can be found at

Career, resume,
and employment service for student veterans
The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development's
Veteran Employment Service provides free transition assistance, resume
development, job search and interview skills, direct referrals to job
openings, and wage and salary negotiation/information. These services
are provided by Veterans Employment Representatives at Minnesota
WorkForce Centers. Veterans Employment Representatives can also aid
student veterans with unemployment benefits claims, advise them
regarding their employment and re-employment rights, and assist them in
accessing employment assistance and training programs offered to
veterans through the U.S. Department of Labor. Student veterans may
contact a Veterans Employment Representative at their nearest Minnesota
WorkForce Center at 1-888-GET-JOBS, or www.deed.state.mn.us/Veterans.
Comfort for Courage
Comfort for Courage (C4C), a student led nonprofit veterans support
group, exists to build awareness and a sense of community for all
veterans on campus. C4C runs the Veterans Transition Center (VTC),
which provides a place on campus for veterans to meet, relax, and have
a good time. Whether you are about to graduate or are just starting
your college experience, the VTC is a great place to relax, share
stories, meet other veterans, play board games, or watch a movie
(there¿s a couch, TV/DVD player, and vending machines nearby so you can
even have some popcorn with your movie). Currently, there is FREE pizza
and pop available every Friday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. If you are interested in
becoming involved with C4C, would like additional information about the
VTC, or just want to receive news about social events, e-mail
C4C@umn.edu
to be added to the e-mail list.
