VA requires class attendance
You must attend class and submit assigned work in order to receive GI Bill and Chapter 35 benefits, according to VA regulations. If you receive an "F" in a class for not attending or not submitting assignments, you may have to repay your veterans education benefits. The USDVA also requires us to report "N" grades that do not count toward your GPA or criteria for graduation requirements. If you receive an "N" in a class, you will be charged with an overpayment.
Before you cancel a class, go online to http://onestop.umn.edu/onestop/Registration/Changing.html so you understand the consequences of lowering your credit load. You may cancel / add a course online or come to one of the three One Stop Student Services centers on campus. You must also report your registration changes to the Veterans Certification Office to make sure that the VA is informed of your change in credit load and you are informed of how it might affect your benefits status.
Not attending a class or reporting a registration change could also affect other financial aid that you receive. If you are facing challenges in your classes or you have any questions about the cancel/add process, please contact the Veterans Services Office in 200 Fraser Hall as early as possible to learn about academic and tutoring resources that are available to you at the University.

Reminders
Report changes in credit load: If
you change your enrollment status (determined by the number of credits
you carry), you must notify the Veterans Certification Office at
612-625-8076 or veterans@umn.edu.
Enrollment changes must be reported to the Department of Veterans
Affairs (VA) to avoid
overpayments of your V.A. Educational Benefits.
When you e-mail us: Please remember to include your full name and student
ID number when you e-mail veterans@umn.edu with questions or
concerns
regarding your certification. We can only respond to inquiries sent
from your University of Minnesota e-mail account.
Submit your FAFSA
Your 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be filed as soon as possible. Apply online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. If you prefer a printed version form, request a copy at the Web site. Be sure to include all military and veterans educational benefits on your FAFSA, as well as the University's Federal School Code, 003969, so your information is sent without delay to the University of Minnesota. For comprehensive financial aid information, go to http://onestop.umn.edu/onestop/financialaid.html.
To be considered for 2009-2010 financial aid, submit a FAFSA after January 1, 2009 (but not before) or as early as possible after filing your 2008 federal tax return. You have a greater possibility of receiving gift aid when you submit your FAFSA to arrive by the priority deadline of March 1, if you are a new student, and April 1, if you are a continuing student. If you have any questions about how your educational benefits affect your FAFSA, please call 612-624-0024 or send an e-mail to holmx029@umn.edu.
